Blues suffered the agony of relegation in 2006 as former manager Steve Bruce was unable to guide his side to survival.

Two years on, and with Alex McLeish now in charge, Birmingham face a fierce battle to avoid Championship football next season.

But Forssell is sure that Birmingham, who sit a point above the relegation zone, have the quality and belief to avoid the drop.

“I think we are in a completely different situation. That season we had a lot of injuries,” he told Sky Sports News.

“There was also not the best feeling in the team. Obviously it is different now. I think you can see that from our recent performances.”

Following a weekend which saw FA Cup underdogs Portsmouth and Barnsley dispose of Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, only a fifth place finish in the Premier League will now guarantee Uefa Cup football for next season.

With Everton having already established a healthy lead over the chasing pack in the race for the final European spot, the likes of Aston Villa, Blackburn and Manchester City are now battling it out for sixth and entry into the qualifying tournament.

With just eight points currently separating Villa in sixth and West Ham in tenth, Hughes expects the battle to go right down to the wire.

Grant, who took over from Jose Mourinho last September, has come in for heavy criticism of late.

The Blues’ Carling Cup final defeat to Tottenham and Saturday’s shock FA Cup quarter-final exit against Championship side Barnsley has heaped pressure on the Israeli coach.

And Jewell, who takes his Derby side to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, admits that Grant could part ways with the club – even if he manages to claim glory in the Premier League or UEFA Champions League.

United departed the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday as Portsmouth claimed a 1-0 triumph at Old Trafford, with Sulley Muntari scoring a late penalty after goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak had been dismissed for a foul on Milan Baros.

Ferguson was left incensed with referee Martin Atkinson for failing to award his side a penalty after Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to be fouled by Sylvain Distin in the first-half of United’s defeat.

Ferguson was also highly critical of Professional Game Match Officials Board manager Keith Hackett for his apparent lack of action in dealing with underperforming officials.

Queiroz was equally enraged, openly criticising Atkinson after he took no action on a challenge by Lassana Diarra on Ronaldo in the opening stages of fixture.

And The FA has now written to Ferguson and Queiroz, asking them to explain their comments.

Both parties have until Wednesday 19th March to respond

The Magpies have been dragged into a relegation fight after failing to record a win since Kevin Keegan’s return to the club in January.

Owen’s future on Tyneside has been the subject of speculation with his current contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Former Liverpool star Owen is reported to be looking a new deal at Newcastle and the 28-year-old says he is settled at St James’ Park.

“I know people talk about contract negotiations,” Owen told the Daily Mail. I’m in a similar position to a lot of players at our club.

The left-sided central defender is currently on a season-long loan at Recreativo from Villarreal.

The 20-year-old signed for Villarreal last year on a five-year contract after impressing in the World Youth Cup and they opted to send him on loan to help him adapt to life in Spain and Europe.

But Caceres’ performances have been beyond expectations and he is already attracting interest from some of the continent’s biggest hitters.

Real Madrid made an enquiry but before they had a chance to take it further – Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich stepped in with a 10 million euros (£7.6million) bid but that was rejected by Villarreal.

Caceres’s current buy-out clause stands at 20 million euros (£15.2million) which neither Chelsea or Real are likely to go to – but the English side have not given up.

The Black Cats captain feels that forthcoming matches against four teams also involved in the battle against the drop leaves their destiny in their own hands.

Roy Keane’s men still have to tackle Chelsea and Arsenal at The Stadium of Light and travel to Aston Villa, but Whitehead has identified four big encounters which he feels could be key to their fate.

With Sunderland only two points above Bolton in 18th, but just two behind Middlesbrough in 12th, the battle against the drop looks set to go right to the wire.

The Portsmouth boss led his charges to a shock 1-0 win at Old Trafford in a highly contentious FA Cup quarter-final at the weekend, but admits that he was surprised to hear that his opposite number had vented his anger at the match officials after the game.

United’s manager was furious at referee Martin Atkinson for a supposed lack of protection for Red Devils winger Cristiano Ronaldo and has subsequently fallen foul of FA chiefs who have now requested that he explain the reasons behind his outburst.

Redknapp though insists that a post-match meeting between the pair gave him no indication that Ferguson was so upset by the afternoon’s events.

“I went in Alex’s office after the game and he was as good as gold,” Pompey’s boss told The News.

“We had a quick glass of wine together and he was fine, not a problem.

“He certainly didn’t say anything to me about the referee or about Ronaldo’s treatment. I only knew what he’d said when I saw it on the TV on the coach.”

Heskey limped out of Sunday’s draw against Arsenal at the JJB Stadium with a foot injury sustained in a challenge with William Gallas.

England international Heskey missed two months of the campaign earlier this season due to a broken metatarsal in the same foot, and there were concerns of a repeat injury.

But x-rays have confirmed the 30-year-old, who has only scored one goal all season, suffered no break.

However, it remains to be seen whether Heskey will be fit enough to play any part in Sunday’s vital relegation clash at home to Bolton .

Curbishley is suffering from sleepless nights after three consecutive 4-0 defeats.

Pressure has mounted on Curbishley after his side slumped to 4-0 losses against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

And the Hammers manager, who received the board’s backing on Monday, has conceded that the results have left him with an uneasy feeling.

“I never expected those three results,” he said in the Daily Express.

Hong Kong tycoon Yeung tried to gain control at St Andrews by buying Gold’s stake in the club, only for the deal to fall through.

Gold along with fellow co-owner David Sullivan insist they have no plans to sell the club and are looking to increase their stake.

Gold says he was never keen on selling his stake to Yeung and that he was delighted that the takeover collapsed last month.

“It was almost a commitment to David Sullivan that if an offer came in of £50million I was willing a seller,” Gold told Sky Sports News.

The 20-year-old joined Pompey in the summer after impressing Harry Redknapp during a trial.

Christophe had a loan spell at Bournemouth earlier in the season and Redknapp is willing to loan him out again so that he can get valuable match-action.

Yeovil assistant manager Steve Thompson believes Christophe will be a valuable addition to the squad.

“He is a big lad, about 6ft 2ins, and looks to play more of a holding role,” Thompson told the Western Daily Press.

“Having a big midfielder is good for defending set pieces and attacking set pieces.”

Steadman is regarded as one of the best surgeons in the world and has helped the likes of Alan Shearer, Michael Owen, Henrik Larsson and Ruud van Nistelrooy all recover from serious knee injuries.

Barnes is struggling with a knee injury he picked up last month in training and he has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old has not suffered any ligament damage, but Derby are sending him to see Steadman to find out if he requires surgery.

“He’s off to see Mr Steadman in America,” said Derby boss Paul Jewell. “I think Michael Owen has been there, Alan Shearer has been there, there are plenty of other players.

The Reds were expected to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title this campaign, but they have struggled to keep pace with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Liverpool find themselves in a battle with local rivals Everton to finish in fourth and Mascherano admits they must get the final UEFA Champions League qualifying spot.

Mascherano, who made his move to Anfield permanent last month, knows they must improve next season and he has called on everyone connected with the club to remain behind each other if they are to achieve success.

“This season, the target is the top four but we need to think about next season and prepare everything so we don’t make the same mistakes. We have drawn too many games at home,” Mascherano told the Daily Mail.

“I know this season has not been the best time for Rafa, but it is not his fault that we are behind Arsenal. He is not on the pitch.

“To win the title, you need the supporters, the squad, the staff, the owners together.

“It is like this table in front of us. You need the four legs or it will fall over.”

The surface at their adopted Fir Park home failed a pitch inspection on Tuesday morning following the bad weather of recent days.

Gretna and Motherwell have encountered a number of postponements this season due to the state of the pitch at Fir Park.

The match was due to be played a day after struggling Gretna, who are 11 points adrift at the bottom of the table, announced their intention to go into administration.

No new date has yet been set for the match to take place.
