UAE coach Bruno Metsu was overjoyed at the result and hoped that the great victory would usher in a period of success for the national side. “It (Gulf Cup victory) is real after the great effort that was given by all the team in the past few months,” he said. “I also hope that it will be a start for the improvement of UAE football and that the UAE league will see good development,” he added.
The Frenchman has faced some criticism during the tournament for playing defensive football, but he claimed vindication after lifting the trophy. “I think we played in the final today to win the tournament and not to entertain only. “But in the second half we had a chance and we scored the winning goal from it.” It all looked so different at the start of the tournament when Metsu’s men lost a showpiece opening game 2-1 against last night’s opponents.
But there was no chance of a repeat performance from a spirited 11 who ran and ran all night, and refused to give up on a single chase against their more fancied rivals.
A crowd of around 60,000 at the Zayed Sports City Stadium went wild when the referee eventually called time after a nerve-jangling finale.
And the players, led by captain Mohammed Omar, were roared on as they were crowned champions of the 18th Gulf Cup by UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
UAE had a bright start to the match and they threatened Ali Al Habsi in the Oman goal twice in the first five minutes through two set-pieces.
In the 13th minute, UAE stepped up the pressure and they went close again when Abdulraheem Juma made a run towards the Omani penalty area but his low cross was cleared by Oman skipper Mohammed Rabia.
Juma had another chance to break the deadlock in the 16th minute when he received a pass from the impressive Matar, but saw his shot cleared for a corner.
Playing with only three at the back, Oman were living dangerously and were grateful that UAE failed to make their chances pay.
There was a major setback for UAE at the start of the second half when left-back Adel Abdulaziz was forced off injured and it was Oman who nearly broke the deadlock when a long-range effort by Khalifa Ayel went inches wide of Majed Naser’s goal.
Oman had another chance to open the scoring in the 66th minute when Fawzi Bashir saw his first-time volley saved at the near post by UAE keeper Majed Naser, who made another save from the resulting corner after a shot from Sultan Al Toqi.
However, UAE were not to be denied victory as Matar got on the end of a long ball before racing inside the area and unleashing a powerful shot which went in off the far post and left Al Habsi with no chance.
Oman’s players charged forward knowing they had less than 20 minutes left, but it was too late as Metsu’s heroes held on to win the Gulf Cup title for the first time in their history – and send all UAE fans home elated. READ MORE UAE NEWS ON http://www.7days.ae
