Neale Fenn’s strike in Cork’s 1-1 draw in Sweden two weeks ago proved to be the all-important away goal as the Irish look forward to welcoming European football to Turner’s Cross.

Dundee United failed at the death to qualify for the Uefa Cup proper after a 2-2 draw with Finns MyPa at Tannadice.

It had all started so well for Gordon Chisholm’s side with goals from Mark Kerr and Collin Samuel in the first half hour giving United a 2-0 lead on aggregate.

However two goals from MyPa’s Adriano in the last quarter of an hour, the first a penalty, meant a second qualifying round exit for the Scots.

Carmarthen bowed out of the Uefa Cup after a 2-0 home defeat to FC Copenhagen resulted in a 4-0 aggregate defeat. Two goals in two minutes from Peter Moller shortly before half time ensured there was no way back for the Welsh.

Welsh side Rhyl also failed to progress to the first round of the Uefa Cup after a 3-1 aggregate loss to Norwegians Viking Stavanger.

Already trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Wales, John Hulse’s side immediately had a mountain to climb when they found themselves 2-0 down after just 25 minutes thanks to a double from Tony Nhleko. Chris Adamson pulled a goal back 10 minutes later but that proved their only reply.

Linfield lost 4-2 at home to Swedes Halmstad with the Irish side 3-0 down at the interval. Despite a creditable 1-1 draw in the first leg the half time deficit made it mission impossible for the Irish side although they gave a spirited second half showing with goals from Mouncy and Ferguson giving the scoreline a respectable look.

Apoel Nicosia claimed a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win over Maccabi Tel Aviv after the tie in Israel went to extra time. Nimni had levelled the score for Maccabi to send the tie into an additional 30 minutes, however two goals in the first five minutes of extra time from Mkaridis and Neophyto effectively settled the tie despite Maccabi’s late reply.

Zurich based side Grasshoppers advanced to the Uefa Cup proper with an away goals victory over Wisla Plock after the aggregate score was tied at 3-3. Wisla claimed a 3-2 win on the night to progress.

Zenit St Petersburg were another side who squeezed through the second qualifying round of the Uefa Cup after drawing 1-1 at home to FC Superfund. Zenit’s 2-2 draw at Superfund ensured their progression on the away goals rule.

Red Star Belgrade trounced Croatian side Inter 4-0 to complete a 7-1 aggregate victory for the Serbs.

Maccabi Petach Tikva gave a sound beating to Macedonian minnows Baskimi with a 6-0 victory ensuring an emphatic 11-0 aggregate success.

Groclin travelled to Slovakia to face Dukla Banska Bistryka with a 4-1 victory under their belts and that lead was never under serious threat during a goalless second leg encounter.

Rapid Bucharest claimed a 1-1 draw against Vardar in Macedonia with Vasilache’s 58th minute equaliser ensuring the Romanians progressed with nerves intact, winning through 4-1 on aggregate.

Levski Sofia overcame a 1-0 first leg deficit to Slovenians Publikum Celje to book their place in the next round after two goals either side of half time from D. Ivankov helped the Bulgarians to a 3-0 success.

Bulgarian side Litex Lovech progressed past NK Rijeka on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate score, despite losing 2-1 in Croatia.

Dinamo Bucharest also progressed despite falling to a 2-1 defeat to Ominia Nicosia on Wednesday. Dinamo’s 3-1 first leg victory ensured they went through 4-3 overall.

Besiktas triumphed 6-1 on aggregate over Vaduz thanks in no small part to a 5-1 rout of the Liechtenstein side in Turkey.

Swiss side FC Zurich beat Legia Warsaw 4-1 as the Poles succumbed 5-1 on aggregate.

Belgian side Genk overcame L.Metalurgs 6-2 overall after a 3-0 home victory. Genk were never in any serious threat after claiming a three goal lead before the half hour with goals from Vandenbergh, Daerden and Stojanovic trouncing the Russians.

It took penalties for Tromso to defeat fellow Scandinavians Esbjerg. Esbjerg claimed a 1-0 victory in Norway cancelling out Tromso’s first leg lead before the match went to extra time and then penalties.

Czech side FK Teplice dispatched MTK Ripo 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

Domzale progressed past Moadan Sport Ashdod on away goals after a 1-1 home draw meant a 3-3 aggregate score.

Bayern Munich midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic will be out of action for three weeks with a groin injury.

The 28-year-old Bosnian international star picked up the injury during a friendly in Croatia on Wednesday.

He underwent an operation on the same evening and will not be available for selection until Bayern’s Bundesliga game at local rivals Nurnberg on September 10 at the earliest.

Better news for Bayern boss Felix Magath is that both striker Claudio Pizarro (back) and German international defender Andreas Gorlitz (cruciate ligament) are back in training.

The pair now look likely to be in the Bundesliga champions’ squad for the visit of Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Long-term injury victim Jens Nowotny says he is hoping to return to action for Bayer Leverkusen in October.

The 31-year-old German international defender has been out of action since suffering the fourth cruciate ligament tear of his career in February, but is determined to make a successful comeback at the BayArena this season.

“I will start full training with the squad in about three weeks’ time and am hoping to get a game or two in October,” Nowotny told Kicker.

“As it is I am already doing everything that doesn’t involve tackling.”

Despite this latest setback to his career, Nowotny added that he has still not given up hope of continuing his international career under Jurgen Klinsmann.

“If everything goes according to plan and my performances are up to scratch, then I’m still very much thinking about the World Cup,” he said.

Greek international striker Zisis Vryzas is hoping to join Bundesliga outfit Nurnberg.

The Fiorentina striker, who starred in Euro 2004 for his country, is currently down the pecking order with the Viola and spent most of last season on loan with Celta Vigo.

Vryzas is keen to join Nurnberg, but is waiting for the clubs to agree a suitable deal before agreeing terms.

“There are discussions with the clubs’ representatives,” said Vryzas to Kicker.

“Things are looking good. The transfer though, of course, does not depend on me.

“I’ve had contact with Fiorentina in order to find the ideal solution for all.”

Stuttgart have snapped up Paris Saint Germain striker Danijel Ljuboja on a season-long loan.

Ljuboja has been expected to quit the French giants for some after failing to shine during his 18 months at Parc des Princes.

The former Strasbourg ace snubbed offers from Fiorentina and Osasuna, while Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Rangers and Deportivo La Coruna all purportedly made an enquiry.

But the Serbia & Montenegro international has settled on a move to Stuttgart, which could turn into a permanent arrangement next summer.

He is looking forward to the prospect of working with coach Giovanni Trapattoni, who first spotted Ljuboja’s ability while he was in charge of the Italian national team.

“Trapattoni wanted me,” Ljuboja told Le Parisien.

“He said to me that he had noticed me at the time of the match in Serbia when he was the Italy coach.

“Stuttgart is the third or fourth biggest club in Germany.

“I always said that if I left Paris it would be for a club of equivalent standing. With Stuttgart, that is the case.”

Ljuboja completed his move to Stuttgart on Thursday after successfully coming through a medical on Wednesday.

Bundesliga side Hamburg are eyeing Anderlecht’s Anthony Vanden Borre as they seek to bolster their squad for a forthcoming Uefa Cup campaign.

Thomas Doll’s side booked their place in Europe following an Intertoto Cup success over Valencia and Doll admitted that he already has several targets in mind.

Doll said: “We are now facing extra matches and should bring in new players.

“We are not forced to start from zero as we are in contact with a couple of people at the moment.”

18-year-old right back Vanden Borre would appear to be Hamburg’s primary target, however the player may tempted to remain in the Belgian capital particularly as Anderlecht have secured their place in the UEFA Champions League after a 4-1 aggregate victory over Slavia Prague.

Emiliano Butragueno has insisted that everyone at Real Madrid would be delighted if Michael Owen remained at the club.

Owen looks increasingly likely to leave the club, with Newcastle still hoping to loan the striker and Liverpool likely to come in for their former icon.

However, Real’s Butragueno would not be unhappy to see the out-of-sorts marksman stay at the Bernabeu.

“Well I want to say that Michael is a great professional and a great human being,” said Butragueno.

“We are very happy with him. His behaviour over the past year has been fantastic.

“He was on the bench for many matches but his performances were very high.

“As for his future we will have to wait. We don’t know exactly what can happen in the coming days. We’ll see.

“There are several English teams that also have an interest but we will wait and see what happens.

“He’s a role model and a fantastic professional, but life has its own circumstances and sometimes you have to make decisions.

“Anyway we have the league starting this weekend and the 31st is the last possible day for transfers.

Alaves’ controversial president Dmitri Piterman has lit the fuse ahead of his side’s clash with Barcelona this Sunday by claiming his side have better players than the reigning Spanish champions.

The new Primera season gets underway this weekend and newly-promoted Alaves have been given the toughest, but also most exciting, start possible by kicking off with a home clash with the Catalans.

Although some sides might be cowed by the prospect of facing Barca, Piterman has come out in typically bullish fashion and insisted his team have nothing to fear.

He claimed the Alaves squad had talent to match the likes of Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco and predicted summer recruit Wesley (pictured) would be one of the revelations of the Spanish league this term.

“Alaves have better players than Barca,” he told Onda Cero Catalunya.

“To start with, the difference between one professional and another is very low.

“Ronaldinho? He’s very good, but I have Nene who as well as being left-footed and having great quality also scored 12 goals last year.

“They have Eto’o? Well I have (Rodolfo) Bodipo, and if we are talking about the relationship between quality and price then for me Bodipo is a thousand times better.

“People also talk about Deco, well I have Wesley who also comes from Portugal and who will be a sensation this year.

“He plays in the same position. While Deco never scored more than six goals playing in this position in Portugal, Wesley scored 14.

“Genuinely, I believe that we have better players in every position than Barcelona.”

The Ukrainian-American entrepreneur has cut a colourful figure ever since he became involved in Spanish football and insists on playing a part in coaching at the club he owns.

But it remains to be seen whether his latest boasts backfire when the two teams come face to face at Estadio Mendizorroza

Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes has vowed to address the club’s disciplinary problems and try and clean up their act.

The Ewood Park outfit have had two players sent off in the first three games of the season and also picked up five cautions.

Rovers skipper Andy Todd, meanwhile, seems certain to face a Football Association charge for an alleged headbutt on Tottenham Hotspur’s Andy Reid.

Hughes is now determined that the players conduct themselves right to prevent their indiscipline from affecting their season.

“I have spoken to the players and told them the focus is on them now and they have to act in a correct manner,” said Hughes.

“But I am aware that at this level you have to be competitive.

“We must look at ourselves and our responsibilities and make sure we don’t overstep the mark.

“At the moment, the balance is not quite right.”

Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has admitted that confidence at the club is not high after a poor start to the new season.

Two defeats and a draw have left Graeme Souness’ men with just a single point from their opening three Premiership matches.

Newcastle’s woes in front of goal continued when they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday evening and the former England marksman admits that the lack of goals is a major cause for concern.

“Confidence is not very high at the moment,” Shearer admitted. “I’d be lying if I said anything else.

“The time to worry is not when you’re missing chances but when you are not creating them and that’s what is happening now.

“We have to look at our own performances and ask ourselves if we’re doing enough.

“We can’t go around blaming it all on anyone else.

“It could have been so different at Bolton if we had taken an early lead through Lee Bowyer but that would merely have papered over what went on after that.

“We have to make sure this poor run does not develop into something worse and that means starting our season again now.

“We’ve got Manchester United on Sunday, which will be tough but we have beaten them in the past.

“It won’t be easy but The Premiership is never easy.”

Despite the impending arrival of Deportivo La Coruna striker Albert Luque, Shearer revealed he has been trying to persuade former England team-mate Michael Owen to move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies have had a club record bid more than £15 million accepted by Real Madrid for the former Liverpool goalscorer and Shearer remains hopeful Owen will choose to join the Toon Army.

“It’s costing me a fortune in phone calls to Madrid,” Shearer admitted.

“Of course, I’d love to have Michael here.

“He is a top-quality player who can really improve us.”
