When you least expect it, the inevitable will happen – the airlines will lose your luggage. Pack your carry on as if they will. Pack all of your medications, a small toiletry bag, a spare pair of clothing, swimsuit – whatever will be appropriate in your destination.

As adventure travel entails travelling to countries that have different faiths, please respect this and dress conservatively and appropriately.

It can be a lot of fun to learn a little of the local language. It puts a beautiful smile of a locals face to hear you try to speak their native tongue.

Insurance is very important when travelling out of your place of residence. Be sure you are properly covered for any emergency. Some of the credit card coverage is often not enough.

Travelling overseas usually puts us in contact with illnesses and diseases that are not found at home. Visit you doctor and local travel clinic for up-to-date and experienced information on the countries you will be travelling to. Your travel agent can suggest what you “may” need but you are required to seek professional medical advice (your agent will not be responsible if you decided not to get a doctor’s advise).

Travelling to foreign countries usually means using different electrical currents and outlets. The hairdryer you use at home may not work elsewhere! Check at your local travel store for information on converters, transformers and adapters.
Credit cards are not always recognized outside of major centers. Do not always rely on their use for your spending needs.

Trying the food and drink in different countries is a great experience. But remember to be careful and cautious of what and where you eat. It does not take much for our bodies to be affected by an unexpected health problem. Always drink bottled water and drinks.

Our environment is very important. “Take pictures and leave only footprints”. Also be very aware of the purchases you make – many of the worlds species are endangered because of commercial trade along with the loss of habitat.

Before taking photos of the locals, ask permission, as a common courtesy. Some people believe that taking a photo will capture their soul.

The costs of visas are never included in the cost of your holiday. Carefully check what you will need and how much the visas cost. Remember that you will often be dealing with a consulate that will not always be as quick as we like – leave yourself enough time to get these documents.

Take a travel book or guide with you. It is always interesting to read up on your next point of interest.

Do not give out candy or money to the local children.
This only increases begging. It is much more rewarding and beneficial to have things available for the schools, hospitals, etc or photos and postcards from your home.

News reports that we see on TV or in the newspaper are not always correct for where you will be going. It is best to contact your government travel advisory department for up-to-date information in the countries you will be travelling to. Yes, things may be happening in the country but it may not at all affect the area you will be in. Just because something is happening somewhere in Africa, it does not mean that it is happening in Tanzania! Remember that you are travelling to a foreign destination and that you are taking responsibility with your decision to go.
