Real Madrid have been waiting for Barcelona to slip up for a long time now, and today’s Barcelona vs Sevilla match might just be what Jose Mourinho ordered. Astoundingly, this is the 7th matchup between these two teams in 14 months, with Barcelona winning 5 of those encounters.

    Sevilla vs Barcelona

The match will mark Guardiola’s 1000th match and he’s expected to field a full squad for this all important match. The last match between these two clubs at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuan came in the Spanish Super Cup and the Nervionenses got the 3-1 win.

Sevilla currently stand in 8th position but they’re just 3 points away from the 5th place position. Barcelona’s last loss is against Arsenal at the Emirates but it has been much longer since a league loss.

Under Pep Guardiola, Barcelona are arguably the best in the art of bouncing back. At the least slip, their strength comes under interrogations from football analyst.

That’s what happened when their shocking defeat at home to Hercules and their unconvincing draw against Mallorca saw them lack in second position behind Real Madrid in La Liga. But when it mattered the most, the Catalans revealed their true faces by trouncing Los Blancos in El Clasico.

Honestly, could there have been a better way for Barcelona to insist that they remain the toughest team to beat in Spain? Still, La Liga has literally not been won yet.

Tonight’s match against Sevilla – which is the first of eleven left in the championship – will contribute in defining Barcelona’s level of concentration. Barcelona’s biggest force, it appears, is their philosophy.

They never seem to look back for too long at a grand victory, so as to lose focus on the battles that are ahead of them. Barca’s beating of Arsenal is in the past now, and they have a La Liga game against Sevilla coming up. But as if the Catalans didn’t have enough fuel in their reserve to carry on until the end of this season, Coach Pep Guardiola has once again shaken his players before they fall asleep.

This term, Los Nervionense aren’t enjoying their best of seasons but Pep isn’t taking anything for granted since Sevilla “have been doing well for several years and are one of the big teams, one of the classics, with good players” as the Barcelona manager explained.

Interestingly, Barcelona are unbeaten away from home in La Liga and they are poised to clinch their thirteenth away victory in fourteen games on Sunday night. But the cautious Guardiola prefers not to be carried away, as he said:

“It is always a hard place to get a result and it’s surprising how much noise the crowd makes. Sevilla is one of the big teams in La Liga and we’ll need to play well.”

For most teams, playing against Barcelona is an honour. But beating them is a dream that only few oppositions have managed to achieve. Sevilla’s Gregorio Manzano would love to be part of those heroes as he revealed during a pre-match press conference.

“We all dream that Barcelona don’t have their best night. It hasn’t happened away from home yet, where they are unbeaten.

“They are so consistent. Hopefully, we will be at our best [on Sunday] and they won’t. That’s the only way to achieve our objective because the game will be very difficult.

“We need to exploit the support of our fans; they are the ones that can give us that extra boost to knock Barcelona off their stride.

“Sometimes the little fish eats the big fish. And is this difficult? Of course, it is. But, it is not impossible.”

Sevilla have also received the backing of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema who scored a brace against Hercules on Saturday. The Frenchman avowed that he is “really hoping” to see Barca lose, as Los Blancos refuse to give up in La Liga.

Will Barcelona go down against Sevilla on Sunday night? Will La Liga title land at the Santiago Bernabeu this season? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’, call that a dream or a miracle…
